About The Author

Get To Know Kayla More!

Hi there! If you didn’t already know, my name is Kayla. Welcome, I am glad you’re here!

I grew up in the cities of Minnesota. From a very young age, I knew that I wanted to be an author. Ever since I learned how to talk, I learned how to write. Words fascinate me. The power they hold is incredible and something to not be taken lightly. They can create happiness, joy, sadness, fear, and so many other things. Words can create a story – which is what I love to do: write stories!

Here is my story…

I never went to college. All the time growing up, I was told from the outside world that I would struggle to get published, or even have a good job, if I did not have a degree. Well, wouldn’t you know it? I proved them all wrong. It can be hard to be surrounded in a world where it seems that the only way to be successful is to go to college. It’s not! Right after I graduated high school, I was enlisted in the Navy. Before I could even make it to basic training, I was medically discharged.

For a moment, I thought everyone was right: I wasn’t going to be successful. Then I realized, that still was not true. I turned into a “workaholic”. I tried out every different type of career that I could grow in. Turns out, I liked a lot of different things! I worked at Caribou for many years. I worked my way up to becoming a General Manager. By the time I was nineteen, I almost had my own store! Then Covid-19 hit. Things fell apart again. But the best thing you can do in those situations, is to get back up, dust yourself off, and try again! That’s what I did. I found my new groove working at a chiropractic clinic. Then that led to a bigger, better job opportunity for myself. Now, I work somewhere that allows me the time to dedicate myself to writing even more. Sometimes, all you need is to get your foot in the door, work hard, and the rest will fall into place.

Being dedicated, reliable, ambitious, and eager to learn new things, really sticks out in a room! You will get noticed by the right people. You will find your groove. You will find what works best for you. It just takes time. I hope my story can inspire you! Continue to read to see how I got to where I’m at: an author.

When I was little, still in elementary school, I had an aunt who dropped off some books for me to read over the summer. At first, I was annoyed. I was and still am a very hyper person. As much as I love to write, I have not been a big reader. I love to read, don’t get me wrong! It just becomes a battle to read, because it makes me want to write. So, I end up putting the book down to go write! However, what those books led to, was something amazing. The books she dropped off were the Waggit series by Peter Howe. It’s a book series about dogs, and I love dogs. The main character was Waggit! I fell in love with the books instantly.

Shortly after I read the entire series, another aunt of mine helped me discover a way to “talk to Waggit”! It was the coolest thing ever to me at that young age. Turns out, I was actually emailing Peter Howe himself! How cool is that for a very young, aspiring author? I was in disbelief. But there I was, emailing him. What turned into conversations about my love for his books, turned into me telling him about my passion to write and to publish my own book one day. Peter Howe easily could have brushed me off and not reply to my emails, but he chose to stay and engage in conversation with a kiddo who may not have known social boundaries yet. I am forever thankful for his guidance at that young age.

I shared with him my first book that I ever wrote: Fighting For a Loved One. I cringe every time I look back at that journal, or even read the title of it, but it reminds me of where I started. When I read it, I sit and giggle at myself. You can certainly tell that a fourth grader was writing the story. During my young age of writing, I was blessed to be surrounded by people who encouraged me to keep with it. My fourth grade teacher, Mr. Keller, for example. He admired it and genuinely encouraged me to keep at it. Between family, friends, teachers, and even a successful author, I got to where I am now.

Thank you for reading my journey about how I got to this point. It’s a special story to me. I hope my story can inspire other writers/authors to keep working towards their dream. Take it from me. With hard work, dedication, and a dream, you can make that dream a reality. It’s mine now! It can be yours, too❣️
